This week Graves Electrical Services and FPL personnel participated in switch training in Palm Beach and Indiantown, Florida, provided by S&C Electric Company. This joint venture will increase efficiency and productivity in the repair, maintenance, and construction of switches at FPL substations across the state. Switches are a vital element of any substation, and one that requires extreme attention to detail due to their dynamic mechanical nature. While a switch might be fully functional and flexible at installation, depending on the nature or location of the substation in question they may stay in one position for years before needing to be disengaged, causing them to become corroded or stiff from weather conditions. Proper installation and maintenance of these switches is crucial to maintaining substation performance, especially when urgent situations arise.
